INTERLOCKS Senior Stylist Cheri C. recently took part in a very exclusive 3-day training at Arrojo Academy in NYC for advanced razor haircutting. With only four guests, this intimate, hands-on workshop allowed for a lot of one-on-one time with instructor Lina Arrojo. Lina is a master stylist and creative director for Arrojo, an expert at razor haircuts, and wife to Nick Arrojo — who you might recognize from TLC’s What Not to Wear!
Even before diving into the advanced training, Cheri was excited to meet this power couple. “Nick is the nicest person ever, so humble and kind,” she said. “Lina is fierce and intense but extremely talented!”

Trend Alert: Razor Cuts
Though the workshop did cover advanced scissor cutting techniques, the bulk of time was spent on razor cutting. Cheri, who was new to razor cutting, learned all about this cutting technique including safety, how to hold the hair when using a razor, what hair types work best with this type of cut, how to create texture, and more.
And now she’s hooked! She loves that she can create seamless, soft cuts with no blunt lines. These features are paramount in recent trends such as the resurgence of the shag cut, the textured graduated bob, and soft gradual bangs — another spring trend we love!
Cheri, who has been a stylist for more than 10 years, shares our commitment for lifelong education and advanced training. She has taught many of our in-house classes in her specialties (like men’s cuts, for one) and will soon teach a razor cutting class to our Salon Assistant Program! As part of their advanced training before taking the floor, our salon assistants enjoy a weekly class taught by one of our Senior or Master stylists.

Some hair types are better suited to razor cuts — for example, frizzy or curly hair may result in frayed or split ends. Razor cuts are only performed on wet hair for the same reasons, so dry-cut lovers may want to stick to shears.
