May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and around the time when many of us begin to think about sun protection. After all, the temps are rising, the sun is shining, and we’re leaving behind memories of snow and frigid winds. But sun care is a year-round commitment!

Melanoma training with Dr. Sarina Elmariah
To aid in our mission for advanced education and top customer service, our aestheticians recently attended a melanoma training with Mass General Hospital Dermatologist Dr. Sarina Elmariah, in which they learned about signs to watch out for on clients’ skin.
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but is almost always curable if recognized and treated early according to The Skin Cancer Foundation. Symptoms can include new or changing moles, scaly patches, bumps, or other changes in skin. Dr. Elmariah refreshed our aestheticians’ knowledge of the ABCDEs of melanoma moles: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving.
Massage Therapist Chrissy B. attended the presentation and was able to compare moles and better learn what is normal. She noted that raised and irregular moles, and especially bleeding moles, are a cause for concern. “If I see an irregular mole on my client, I’ll ask if they are aware of it,” Chrissy said.
Got sun damage?
We know that talking about skin cancer can be a little scary. But the truth is that most people have some sun damage, and there are ways to help. Firstly, prevention of future sun damage (see below)! Regular self exams and yearly medical checkups are highly important to monitor any new or changing moles or skin conditions. There are also products such as Environ® and certain laser services that can treat symptoms like wrinkles, brown spots, and uneven skin tone.
